Apollo 13 Mission It’s Possible
Failure is not an option!!
Astronauts and Ground control work together on this mission to
rescue the stranded astronauts. Teams will work as a unit to
complete their assigned missions. Teams earn points in each
mission based on their performance against the Goal or Clock. The
better the performance, the higher the point totals to buy
materials and supplies for their final mission.
The group will be divided into 3 squads who will be challenged in
some mind boggling activities. Each team must successful complete
each challenge in order to move on to the next step of the
mission. The ultimate goal is to successfully deliver 6
astronauts (Eggs) to earth without crashing.
The teams will start with training in communication and problem
solving games. At times during the session we will combine teams
to have them brainstorm and some possible solutions.
Team Juggling Embrace Change Listening Skills
This fast paced game has teams develop a plan for passing an
object around a circle. As the game progresses the rules change
and the goal becomes more difficult. This takes listening skills
and flexibility to reach the final goal.
Tinker Toy Tower Passion for Excellence Planning and
Prioritization
Teams have 10 minutes to develop a strategy to build the
tower to a minimum height of 72”. Teams then have 90 seconds to
rebuild the tower. Teams review the process and decide if their
plan was acceptable or can be improved upon.
The Electric Fence Goal Setting
Long/Short Term Planning
The entire squad must pass through the electric fence to continue
their mission. Each of the holes on the fence has a different
shape, size and point value. Once the hole is used or is touched
by a participant the hole is closed and may not be used again.
The teams set point goals before they begin the mission. Did I
set my sights to low or to high?
Great Escape Non-Verbal Communication Trust
The team members have been captured, blindfolded and placed
in a circle. The only way to escape their captors is to turn the
circle into a perfect square. Once the team is blindfolded and
placed in the circle the only person who can talk is the team
leader.
When the challenges are complete we launch a rocket that will
take our astronauts into space. Once the rocket is launched we
will view a cut from the movie Apollo 13 showing the teams
working together to solve a problem.
HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM Astronaut (Egg) Retrieval Innovation
Creativity
This closing event allows team members to design and build a
device that will allow eggs to be dropped from 8 feet in the air
to stopping within 3” of the ground without breaking. The goal is
to have the teams drop up to 6 individual eggs within 1 minute
without breaking. The mission goal
is to rescue 16 eggs between
the 3 squads. |
